REVIEW: Desiena Cigars – 312

Desiena Head

DeSiena Ciagrs is about as close to the “boutique” title as you can get. A small production company with one blend (312) and five (5) vitolas. DeSiena Cigars has a simple and perfect goal and philosophy; “produce a consistent burning smoke, time and time again.”

Rather than focusing on packaging, DeSiena Cigars wanted to put emphasis into the quality of the cigar and create a quality smoke that would be appealing to all premium cigar smokers, regardless of preference. In other words, a flavor bomb that matches all palates. Easier said than done.

Where did the blend name “312” derive from? 312 was marked on a batch of tobacco used during the initial blending process in Danli, Honduras.

APPEARANCE / CONSTRUCTION:

The wrapper is a dark, earthy color with a slight touch of an oil glow. The body is quite toothy from top to bottom with a few minor veins running across the body. There is one single band in standard placement that is highly detailed and boasts many different colors. The picture in foreground is of Siena, Italy. The crest is Adam Siena’s (Founder) family crest while crown signifies excellence. Desiena Cigars outfits the (name here) with a triple cap head and a standard foot.

The 312 is very dense and weighty. The wrap job isn’t quite seamless, but a tight wrap none the less with no lifts in the body. One thing I highly appreciate, a band that is not choking or stuck to the cigar, Desiena’s band seems like it will slide off with ease.

PRE-LIGHT:

Cocoa, tobacco, cream and earth radiate from the body and leave a sweet touch to the nose. The foot matches the body with cocoa and cream really bursting through.

Cold draw is fairly tight, which I am praying will change once lit. Notes of cocoa really come through with the cream following for the finish.

Desiena first

FIRST THIRD:

The Desiena 312 lights with ease and brings a burst of sweetness. The first third is full of flavor with cocoa, cream, macadamia nut and tobacco with a sugary sweet finish cover the palate.

Draw is slightly tight but still producing a fairly strong volume of smoke on the exhale and very light smoke off the foot. The burn line is razor sharp and has not needed a touch up since the flame hit the leaf. The ash looks great; white and tight!

SECOND THIRD:

The ash falls at the entrance of the second third. Draw is beginning to open but still a little tight. The burn is still beautifully sharp and smoke production has grown if anything.

The profile hasn’t had a dramatic change by any means, although, it has shifted. In the previous third, the cocoa and cream was very sweet while in the second third, the cocoa and cream are still slightly sweet but a more of a dry profile. The original macadamia has transitioned to being more of a cashew.

Desiena third

THIRD THIRD:

The final third begins with some of the sweetness still lingering and finishes with just about none. The cocoa is still around but really becomes a more dark cocoa. In the final third you really loose all the nutty aspect that was present in previous portions of the Desiena 312. Also non-present in the final is the cream. As the final third burns to ash, the cream fades more and more.

Smoke production is growing in density as a nice white. The ash has fallen in each third and the burn is still razor sharp. The draw has become quite a bit more constricted.

FINAL THOUGHTS:

DeSiena Cigars has done an incredible job at reaching their goal and fiilling their philosophy. The 312 blend is delicious, smooth, powerful, and just awesome! The profile is consistent and yet dynamic. What more could a palate ask for? When Shaun (Owner of GoodFellas Cigar Lounge) and I lit the DeSiena 312, after the first few puffs, we both glanced at each other and no words were even needed.

Construction of the 312 from beginning to end is nearly flawless; the burn was tight and straight, draw was just right and smoke billowed with every exhalation. Did I mention this was my favorite vitola?

All in all, the DeSiena 312 creates one of the best smoking experiences you will find and set the bar for 2014.
